Tower Gardens

Since 2013, Wolastoq Education Initiative has introduced Tower Gardens into elementary school classrooms, transforming learning by connecting students with sustainable practices and cultural teachings. These aeroponic systems allow students to grow fresh produce without soil, using only water and essential nutrients. The Tower Gardens enable young learners to explore plant biology hands-on, while also understanding the role of traditional land stewardship principles.

For Wolastoqey communities, the principles of environmental respect and sustainable practices are integral to Indigenous knowledge. Through the Tower Gardens, students gain insights into resource conservation, ecosystem interdependence, and the importance of giving back to the land, which are key aspects of Wolastoqiyik teachings. These gardens act as a dynamic classroom where students not only grow plants but also develop values of care, reciprocity, and ecological responsibility.

Bringing these gardens into schools has had a powerful impact on the lives of the youth. The opportunity to nurture and harvest their own plants empowers students, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride. These skills go beyond academics, teaching self-sufficiency, sustainability, and a respect for their environment. Wolastoq Education Initiative’s efforts have made it possible for youth to gain both knowledge and a profound connection to their heritage, building a foundation for a sustainable future.
