Workforce development

  • Trail Building and Maintenance: Students have helped develop and maintain our community trail, learning skills in construction, landscaping, and environmental stewardship.
  • Language Revitalization Projects: Students contribute to preserving our language by creating resources such as books and digital materials.
  • Bench and Outdoor Furniture Creation: Using tools like the Glowforge laser cutter, students design and build benches and furniture for community use.
  • Radio Broadcasting: Working with our radio station, 99.9 FM SFTTFN (Station For The Nation), students gain experience in media production, communication, and broadcasting.
  • Cultural Cooking and Practices: Students have the opportunity to learn and teach traditional cultural practices, including cooking traditional meals and preserving local customs.

These projects are not just exercises in skill-building; they help foster a sense of pride, responsibility, and connection to the community. By the end of the program, students have tangible outcomes they can point to—whether it’s a new bench along the trail, a language resource, or a community event they helped organize.

Annual Curriculum Development

Each year, we develop and deliver our own curriculum that aligns with the needs and interests of the students. This approach ensures that the program is not just about "jobs" but about personal and professional development. The curriculum evolves as we identify new opportunities for our students, incorporating elements of leadership, teamwork, and cultural awareness.

A Foundation for the Future

Through the program, students gain hands-on skills that go beyond summer employment. They leave with valuable experience in problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, and project management, all while being deeply rooted in their cultural heritage. The program empowers youth to see themselves as vital contributors to the community and encourages them to continue building a positive future for themselves and Tobique.

The high school summer program continues to grow and adapt, just as our students do. By creating these special opportunities year after year, we are building a stronger, more resilient community and fostering the next generation of leaders.
